Prompt #35
The ceiling fan kept me awake all night.
One night, years ago, I awoke from a dream and thought there was a giant spider in my room. I was still half asleep and couldn’t move. I wanted to nudge my Hubster to warn him. This spider was huge, judging by its shadow. I bet you’re laughing - or thinking I’m nuts. I’m not sure how long I lay there, terrified. Time stretches in curious ways when you’re caught between the waking world and dreamtime. I was convinced a monster was waiting to descend from the ceiling. I wanted to run, but was still frozen. Then, I could wiggle my toes. And the whole thing melted. I was awake! I stared at the horrible shadow. Where was this spider?
It wasn’t a spider at all.
I bet you can guess…you’ve probably known all along. I gave it away at the beginning.
The shadow was the fan. Moonlight at just the right angle made the darn thing look like a giant spider with dangling legs.
Even after I woke fully, I lay there staring at the ceiling. Remnants of the scare lingered til dawn.
Have you ever been scared by something that later proved ridiculous?
